Noble Nuggets – Service to Humanity

Noble Nuggets – Service to Humanity

Mahatma Gandhi once said: “The best way to find your self is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Today, he is recognized as one of the greatest political and spiritual leaders of the twentieth Century and known for practicing the values of unity, equality, truth, non-violence, justice and honesty. Most importantly, he is known for dedicating his life to being in service of others and that was a full, fulfilled life.

Being in service means giving without the expectation of reciprocation. It’s in everyday actions like donating old/used clothes and electronics; starting a non-governmental, non-profit organization aimed at creating a better society for all; feeding the hungry; mentoring a younger, aspiring person in the community; and volunteering however you can, wherever you can.

There are many benefits of being in service of others. Psychologically, it makes you appreciate life itself and the people in it; it helps you feel good about yourself and reduces stress and depression. It also improves your social skills by helping you create and cultivate good relations with people and increases your social awareness and responsibility. It also helps you enhance your personal knowledge by experiencing different things and improving your skills.

The most important rule about service is having a good intention. If you contribute to the community so people would notice and remark on how good of a person you are, you’re not doing it with good intentions and the results or rewards won’t be half as fulfilling. At Noble Hall, we encourage our learners to be more empathetic; indeed it is through that that they will be inspired to be in service of others.
